Best Way To Clean Brick and Stone

Posted on October 20th, 2019 by Devine Bros

It’s no surprise that after having your patio and deck redone that you’re inclined to show it off to everyone — and rightfully so! Your new masterpiece at home is certainly something to marvel over, and it’s important to not only use it, but maintain it as well. Over the years, brick and stone can begin to appear weathered, which isn’t always the worst thing to happen, but definitely not the most favorable. Instead of allowing the appearance to become tainted, we’ve got a few tips and tricks you can use to clean these stones and keep them looking as clean as ever!

Powerwashing

One of the obvious choices here is power washing — using a high-pressure stream of water to get rid of all dirt and buildup on the surface of your stones — which does make a huge difference! You can begin by using a broom and some soap & water to saturate the area and get it ready for cleaning. After allowing it time to settle, bring the power washer over and begin on a small section to determine the type of pressure you’re going to use to safely clean the stone. Once you’ve made 1-2 passes over the area, take a hose with less pressure and clear out the remaining water that’s still soiled with dirt and debris. Additionally, there are also options to attach a round surface cleaner to the hose which can help bring adequate pressure to the surface AND clean a larger area in a quicker time frame.

Bleach

For mildew, rust and stains, bleach can also be your best friend in cleaning these materials. Bleach, unlike powerful water, has the ability to cut through a ton of different types of buildup and can certainly have benefits when it comes to aggressive cleaning. Simply mix one part water into one part bleach (wear protective gear!), and begin scrubbing the affected area. Also make sure to keep a hose nearby so you can begin to hose the area off and check for your progress on cleaning the area.

Cleaning your investments is what makes them last longer, and provides a long-term value to them, especially if you’re going to sell your home or business in the near future.
