Can My AC Be Dangerous?

Posted on May 20th, 2021 by Devine Bros

The question of whether or not your AC is dangerous may seem a little strange, but it’s important to ask. You don’t want to risk being without an air conditioner during the summer because you’re worried about safety. It’s a subject that we can’t stress enough– your AC should be checked regularly by a professional for safety concerns.

Here is what you should know about any AC safety concerns:

So, Is It Dangerous?

It’s an important question many homeowners forget to ask– is my AC dangerous? The simple answer is that your air conditioner may be the safest appliance in your home, as long as it’s installed and maintained correctly. That being said, there are a few situations where an AC can pose a danger to those living in the house or building it serves.

Danger Examples

  • Unclean Air: These machines use the air that we breathe and emit exhaust from their motors into our homes. This air is often not as clean as what comes out of a vent or fan in the house because it’s filtered through the machine’s condenser coils. An air filter or quality system is the best way to beat this.
  • Carbon Monoxide Poisoning: One way your system is unsafe is because of carbon monoxide poisoning– which is very common with poorly installed systems. Having a professional technician come in often for maintenance checks can help ensure your system is functioning properly.
  • Mold and Mildew: If your home is too humid when you turn on the AC, condensation may form on walls or ceilings in a room with high humidity levels (i.e., kitchen). This can lead to mold growth that releases spores into the air, which causes respiratory problems and allergies.
  • Ozone Gas Emission: ACs also release ozone gas which can irritate the lungs and cause other problems such as asthma attacks, chest pain, fatigue, nausea, and headaches. The toxic chemicals emitted can be detected by a high-quality system or if you notice any of the symptoms.

While these are all serious threats to your home, as long as your system is properly maintained and serviced, you won’t have to worry about any of these dangers too often!
