The lifespan, however, is also based on how often the system was used, its exposure to temperature and humidity, and the size of the unit. With regularly scheduled maintenance, though, your A/C will have a greater chance of living longer.

Increase in Energy Bills

A worn-out air conditioner has to work harder than it has to in order to function properly, thus, consuming more energy. Be sure to monitor your monthly utility bills for any discrepancies, but keep in mind that your bills may be a little higher during the summer. However, if your grand total has skyrocketed multiple times, there may be an issue with your central air conditioner.

Contains R-22 Freon

Since 2020, new air conditioners have been manufactured to not operate on R-22 in the United States. Chlorodifluoromethane (R-22) has been known to cause harmful environmental effects; therefore, the EPA is phasing it out. And due to the detrimental consequences this refrigerant is known to cause; it will be hard to source this chemical to replenish your older unit. So, if your equipment operates on this refrigerant, you should prepare to invest in a replacement.
