Step-by-Step Guide to Weatherproofing Your Windows and Doors

Posted on November 30th, 2024 by Devine Bros

Are cold drafts sneaking in around your windows and doors? Sky-high heating bills during the winter? If your home feels less cozy and more like a wind tunnel, it might be time to weatherproof your windows and doors. Not only can this save you money on energy costs, but it will also make your home more comfortable and keep winter chills where they belong—outside!

Here’s how to weatherproof step-by-step from our Devine Bros team using weather stripping, caulking, and insulation.

Step 1: Check for Leaks

Before you fix a problem, you need to find it. Stand near your windows and doors on a chilly day and feel for drafts. You can also use a lit candle or incense stick—move it along the edges and look for flickering smoke to identify leaks. Once you know where the trouble spots are, it’s easier to address them and winterize your home for maximum heat retention.

Step 2: Install Weather Stripping

Weather stripping seals gaps around moveable parts of windows and doors, like where the sash or door meets the frame. Here’s how to apply it:

  1. Choose the Right Material – Foam tape is great for small gaps, while V-seal stripping works well for sliding windows. Adhesive-backed rubber is durable for bigger drafts around entry doors.
  2. Measure and Cut – Measure the perimeter of the window or door and cut the strip to size.
  3. Clean the Surface – Ensure the area is dry and dust-free so the adhesive can stick.
  4. Apply the Weather-Stripping – Press it firmly into place to form a tight seal.

The result? No more air leaks around your windows and doors!

Step 3: Seal Gaps with Caulk

Caulking is the go-to solution for non-moveable parts. It seals cracks and gaps around window frames and door edges.

  1. Choose the Right Caulk – Silicone caulk is perfect for outdoor use because it’s weather-resistant, while acrylic caulk works indoors and can be painted over.
  2. Clean the Area – Remove any old caulk or debris to create a clean surface.
  3. Apply the Caulk – Use a caulking gun to run a steady bead along the edges, filling in cracks. For a neat finish, smooth it with a damp finger or caulk tool.

Caulking ensures no sneaky drafts can make their way into your home.

Step 4: Add Insulation

Insulation isn’t just for your attic! Thin areas around windows and doors can benefit from some extra attention, too.

  • Use Window Insulation Film – This clear plastic film can be applied over windows, creating an extra barrier to prevent heat loss. Simply secure it with double-sided tape and shrink it tight with a hairdryer for a seamless look.
  • Install Door Sweeps – If you have gaps under doors, a door sweep can block cold air from coming in. Attach it to the bottom of the door for instant protection.

Step 5: Regular Maintenance

Weatherproofing isn’t a “set it and forget it” task. Inspect the seals and insulation every year before winter. Replace worn weather stripping and reapply caulk as needed. Keeping your home energy-efficient requires a little upkeep!
