Recycling Tips For Your CT Home
Posted on March 29th, 2018 by Devine Bros
For many people, recycling means putting paper and plastics in the blue plastic bins instead of the trash can. This is the act of recycling itself, but the essence of recycling is to reduce waste, reuse things instead of throwing them away, and recycling items that can be reproduced at a lower cost and use fewer resources than making from scratch with new materials Here are a few ways you can help the cause.
Reduce Consumption
Reducing the amount that we consume is one way to avoid bringing home extra “containers” that will end up in the trash. When making a purchase, consider the packaging and whether it can it be recycled or reused.
Another way to avoid bringing home those plastic grocery bags is to 1) bring your own reusable totes, or 2) skip the bag and load your groceries in a cardboard box that is kept in the trunk of the car just for shopping. Some grocery stores will give you a box or paper bag as an alternative if you ask.
Should it be Thrown Away, or Recycled?
Think before you throw things away. Sometimes we discard things we no longer want or that no longer serve a purpose. Instead of tossing them out, think of ways they can be used again. If it’s broken, consider figuring out if it’s worth it to fix or not. In some cases, It might be cheaper to fix an existing appliance than to buy a brand new one to replace it. If it’s something you no longer need, consider donating it or giving it away to someone less fortunate who might be able to make use of it.
Repurpose old items.
Instead of throwing something away, think of a new way it can be used. Look through magazines for ideas and inspiration. Old mason canning jars can be used to hold dry goods like beans and pasta, or double for decorative containers for handmade gifts!
Donate your old desktop computer or laptop to a school when you get a new one. Bicycles, lawn mowers, and kids playground equipment can all be used again as long as it is in good condition — you just need to find a home for it!
