With fall finally in full swing, we’re able to reap the benefits of a few things. Sweater weather, apple and pumpkin picking, and color-changing leaves! While these are usually things that people love, for some, it’s less than pleasant to see a bed of leaves on your property that need raking and disposing of. However when it comes to what to do with leaves, most people throw them into a bag, and toss them to the curb! However, in retrospect, there are a few unique uses for them! We’ve got a couple of tips and tricks you can use on your property this season to make the most of your leaves.

Composting

Perhaps one of the most environmentally conscious decisions, composting is a great option for those who are interested in the trade and want to make a positive impact on their land. Paired with other compostable items, these leaves can eventually be broken down into nutrient-rich soil for use around your property in a number of different applications! The best part about this process is that it’s totally free, and only has benefits!

Firestarter Logs

Believe it or not, dried leaves can be great ways to start fires inside of your fire pit. Grab two 5-gallon buckets and drill holes into the bottom of one. Fill this bucket with leaves and then add water in order to saturate them. Use the second bucket to apply pressure and compress the wet leaves to the bottom while the water drains out. Allow it to completely dry out and then break apart the dried brick as necessary when you need help starting a fire!

Insulation

For your smaller tender plants, you can use leaves to insulate them during the winter months as well. By using chicken wire and stakes to form a tall enough wall around the plant and then tossing leaves inside, you can effectively cut the amount of cold air and wind that will pass through, which can help protect your plant and keep it thriving during the winter months.
