Troubleshooting Hot Water Problems in Your Home

Have you ever been taking a shower or washing your hands when suddenly your warm water ends up freezing cold? You’re not alone if you’re having trouble with your hot water running out too quickly.

This common problem has several causes, but some simple troubleshooting can help you identify and fix the issue. Let’s take a look at some of the most common reasons for limited hot water supply.

Hot Water Tank Size

An undersized hot water tank is one of the most common reasons for running out of hot water. A tank that is too small for your household’s needs will struggle to keep up with demand, resulting in decreased pressure and restricted flow. If your home has undergone an expansion or if you’ve recently installed new appliances that require additional hot water, it may be time to consider upgrading to a larger tank.

Leaking Pipes

Another potential cause of a restricted hot water supply is leaking pipes. A leak in any part of your plumbing system can decrease the available pressure and reduce the amount of hot water available at any given time. To check for leaks, perform a visual inspection of all exposed piping and fixtures in your home. Look out for wet spots, rusting pipes, or dripping fixtures — all of which could indicate a leak somewhere in the system.

Insufficient Propane Levels

If your propane tank is running low on fuel, then it may not be able to produce enough heat for the hot water tank. If this is the case, then you will need to refill your propane tank before anything else can happen. You can do this by contacting your local propane supplier. Once you’ve refilled the tank, wait for a few hours before testing your hot water again — it should now be back up and running!
