Think the air in your home is clean? Think again. According to the EPA, indoor air may be up to ten times more polluted than the air outside – and we spend 90% of our day indoors! Here are five ways you can clean up the air in your home.

1.) Change your air filters.

When was the last time you changed the filter on your furnace or central air system? A dirty filter not only hinders your energy efficiency, it can pollute the air in your home. Clean or replace your filters every month or two in accordance with your manufacturer’s recommendations.

2.) Ditch the air freshener.

Air fresheners freshen your air, right? Not quite. Despite their name, they are actually one of the biggest sources of indoor air pollution. Use one of these homemade fresheners or light a match to eliminate foul odors.

3.) Add some houseplants.

Houseplants not only add life to your room, they can help clean your air too! NASA conducted a study in the 1980s that found that certain plants can naturally remove pollutants from the air. Not all plants are created equal, however.

4.) Clean your air ducts.

Do you know what’s hiding in your air ducts? An afterthought for most homeowners, your ducts could potentially be circulating mold, dust, pet dander, and pollen throughout your house. Have them professionally cleaned every 3-5 years.

5.) Open your windows.

With the weather warming up in the Fairfield County area, keep your windows and doors open whenever possible to promote better air flow throughout your home.
