After a very short winter, spring is in the air all around Connecticut. With Fairfield County temperatures reaching as high as 80° in recent days, homeowners are starting to think about spring cleaning and home improvement projects.

Before spring officially hits on March 20th, here are a few things you should do to make sure your home is prepared for the warm weather.

Clean your gutters

Those spring showers are on their way, you want to make sure your home isn’t damaged as a result. Leaves and sticks can accumulate in your gutters during the winter months, which can cause all kinds of problems if they aren’t cleaned out. When your gutters can’t effectively drain water, heavy rain can pour over the side of your roof, damaging your siding and flooding your basement. Leaky ceilings are another common consequence of backed up gutters, so break out that ladder and clean out them now!

Swap out your storm windows

Many homeowners install storm windows and doors on their homes before the start of every winter. This extra sheet of glass helps reduce heat loss and adds an extra layer of defense against the harsh winter weather, but they should be removed during the spring. Swap them out for screen windows and doors to promote better air flow when the weather warms up.

Have your A/C system tuned up

Did you know that many central air manufactures recommend having their systems professionally tuned up every year? In fact, many of them will even void their warranties if they are not. A professional tune up can improve your energy efficiency and even help to prevent future break downs. The start of spring is the best time to schedule a tune up because you don’t want your A/C breaking down in the middle of a heat wave, when HVAC companies tend to be at their busiest.
