Pollen is in the air, and for those of us who suffer from seasonal allergies, this can be the most uncomfortable time of the year. Living with allergies can be tough, but these five tips can help alleviate your symptoms and provide some much-needed comfort during the harsh spring months.

  1. Start medicating now. If you wait until you start sneezing to take your allergy medicine, you are already too late. For best results, start taking your medication two weeks before symptoms are likely to set in.

  1. Change your air filters. Your heating and cooling systems have air filters that should be cleaned or replaced periodically. Not only does this keep them running efficiently, it limits the amount of air pollutants that can enter your home.

  1. Opt for the A/C. Instead of opening your windows to cool down, use your air conditioner – both at home, and in the car. It may cost you more money, but at least you are preventing high levels of pollen from entering your home through your window.

  1. Keep your floors clean. If you don’t keep up on your carpet cleaning, your rugs could be harboring all kinds of contaminants, including dust mites and pollen. Vacuum and mop regularly, and instill a strict no-shoes policy for your family and guests.

  1. Clean your air ducts. Air ducts are an afterthought for most people, but they are one of the biggest reasons for allergies indoors. Allergens can infiltrate your HVAC system, and use the air ducts as a way to spread throughout your entire home.

Your home is supposed to provide shelter from your outdoor allergies. If your symptoms get worse while inside, poor air quality could be to blame. If you live in Norwalk, Connecticut or the surrounding area, contact Devine Bros. for a free indoor air quality consultation at (203) 866-4421.
