When the weather gets cold, nothing is more important than our home heating systems. Here is a step-by-step maintenance routine you can follow to make sure yours is ready for the long winter season ahead.

  1. Check your air vents. Obstructed air vents can compromise the performance of your heating system, and also present a fire hazard. Take a walk around your house and make sure all of your vents are clear of furniture, curtains, and other blockages.

  2. Clean the burner mechanism. The burner element turns your fuel source into heat, and is one of the most important components of your furnace. Locate the burner and clean off any dust or dirt that may have accumulated over the summer months. Inspect it for signs of rust, and make sure it is properly aligned with your furnace.

  3. Change the air filters. Changing the air filters is the first step in any furnace maintenance routine. Dirty air filters allow dust and debris to enter your heating system, and are estimated to cause 8 out of every 10 furnace failures.

  4. Lubricate the blower. Your furnace blower should always be properly lubricated in order to prevent extra wear-and-tear on your system. Turn off your circuit breaker, and remove the blower from the furnace, and oil it up. Just a few drops of oil in each port is enough to keep it running smoothly.

  5. Fire it up. Once you’ve completed the steps above, it’s time to test your furnace out. Fire it up and leave it running for a few hours to make sure it is operating at full capacity. If you notice any issues – such as weird noises, smells, or cold air coming from your vents – contact a local HVAC service to fix the problem.
