5 Concrete Facts

Posted on August 19th, 2020 by Devine Bros

For most of us, concrete isn’t on the front of our minds every day. However, the sidewalk you’re walking down and that cute pathway to your home and much more are often made up of this material. Besides being a very durable and practical building product, concrete also has some fun facts that not many people know. Here are some of our favorites:

1.) It’s The Most Used Material In The World

Surprised? We aren’t! Every town, city, and state utilizes this material for everyday use. As we stated earlier, from sidewalks to bridges and roads, concrete can keep these projects durable all year long. It’s very reliable and affordable, making it the easiest and best to use.

2.) Concrete Use in Bridges and Buildings

For bigger and bolder projects, concrete can help keep the structure that’s being built sturdy. It’s also cheaper than steel, so many of the high-rise buildings you see in big cities could have been made with concrete.

3.) The Romans Named Concrete

Did you know that the name concrete comes from the Latin word “concretus”, which means “to grow together”? This refers to the chemical process that helps concrete mold into a harder material while drying.

4.) Ancient Romans Loved Concrete

The Ancient Romans were the first to use concrete as a building material. You can find many structures still standing today that were made with this material, such as the Pantheon.

5.) Cement & Concrete Are NOT The Same

Why did they make them both start with Cs if they didn’t want people mixing them up? The fact of the matter is that cement is an ingredient in concrete– actually one of the most essential components.
